'Bar' (056) is one of 13 new eye shadow quints released this Fall/Autumn 2014 season from Dior. There are of course, new Rouge Dior Lipsticks and Nail Polishes to coordinate with these eye shadow palettes. I did not pick up any of the nail polishes but purchased 2 of the lipsticks in 'Bar' and 'Rose Tutu' (to be reviewed soon).
Packaging
The new eye shadow palettes have a new, thinner, sleeker and simpler look. The lacquer is darker to match the Dior Rouge lipstick packaging released late last year (see here), so overall, it all looks more consistent, but the luxuriousness remains. While I appreciate the sleeker design, I must say that I do still slightly prefer the older packaging with the holographic 'CD' monogram - I think it adds interest and it's very cool! You can see the changes in the old versus the new packaging in the images down below. There's also a very soft, has a lot (perhaps too much) give, and not dense brush end on one of the applicators as a new inclusion. While I like the softness of the new brush as it's less harsh on the eye area, I do wish it were denser so it does a better job of blending. (Luckily, the eye shadows in this palette are textured such that it makes it easy anyway).
Colours, Finish & Pigmentation
As numbered above and in the swatches below, we have in the palette the following shades:
1 // Neutral white iridescent highlighter.
2 // Medium, neutral grey with a satin to sheen finish.
3 // Light to medium rose taupe with a satin finish.
4 // Matte black.
5 // Sheer, very pale, warm-toned pink with white/silver iridescence.
All shades have decent to excellent pigmentation. In particular, the light rose taupe shade in the middle applies ultra smoothly and perfectly evenly. The #5 shade can be used as a light wash over the lid or as a highlighter. The matte black is great in this one compared to many matte black eye shadows I've encountered in the past. :)
Texture & Longevity
I found the texture of all the eye shadows to be quite good. Soft, ultra fine and smooth, which makes them easy to apply, blend and meld well with the skin. I didn't experience any fall out, and I found the eye shadows lasted through most of the day with little fading on my eye lids which have normal skin condition (neither oily or dry) and without a primer.
Swatches
Below are (dry) swatches applied on my medium, olive (~NC30) skin tone. No primer used. Photographed indoors under artificial lighting and using a strobe.
Below - the swatches photographed in low light (without a strobe) to capture the iridescence in the eye shadows.
Overall
A lovely grey neutral palette with soft, pale pink and rose mauve hues to give it a touch of femininity and class. That subtle hint of colour helps to lift and brighten the eyes. Overall, very pretty, easy to wear shades that's hard to fault save maybe for the high price point. Nonetheless, it is Dior! ;-)
I have been eyeing 'Trafalgar' and 'Cuir Cannage' next - if I can get a hold of them!

Hi Indigo :)
ReplyDeleteIt's been some time since I've commented on your blog as I have somewhat fallen out of my love affair with Burberry of late & my heart has been captured by Tommy aka Tom Ford, especially lusting after his recent Fall collection! Lol...of course I still read all your lovely postings & on occasion stalk your instagram, haha. I enjoy seeing your cute pics of Charlie & all the yummy food! When I checked in today, I was surprise to see your picture & just wanted to tell you how beautiful you are! Hope you are having a fabulous day!
x Naomi
Hi Naomi! So good to hear from you again. :D Thanks so much for such kind words! Oh my!! Hehe...it was my husband who made me do it. I guess it's only fair since I have posted a few IG pics of him already. *grin* Had no idea you were on IG too - thanks for following! Yes, please do stalk us there. ^_^ ;-) You made my day. Thanks again and I hope you had a fab day also.
DeleteI'm not surprised you have fallen out of love for Burberry a little - I must say I have as well. I did buy only 1 from their summer collection - the rest I skipped seeing as they all were too sheer for me. :( And I can understand your love of TF. I do use quite a few of his products often, but for some reason never get around to posting about them! >_< I really should as I think some of those products deserve a good mention on my blog. I'll have to try to find the time. :) Anything in particular you fancy from his fall collection? I would love to get a hold of the Nude Dip quad - looks so pretty.

Hi again Indigo! :D
DeleteYour husband was right in making you post a pic of yourself, he obviously knows he is married to a beautiful woman.
I already got my hands on Nude Dip & it is simply gorgeous! I know some people complain that it looks frosty in swatch photos, but in person I do not find that to be true. I also got the lipstick Negligee. It is opaque & dark for me, but I find applying it with a lip brush helps soften it & gives a nice plummy fall shade on my lips. The 2 blush duos are gorgeous too, but I passed on them as the colors are a little too rich for my complexion, but I bet those shades would look divine on you!

Aww, that is so sweet of you to say. ^_^ Hehe. ;)
DeleteWith all the pretty pictures and swatches I've seen of Nude Dip and your comment verifying it isn't too frosty - I decided to get it! Very thrilled to find they had it at Selfridges online. Yay! I am looking forward to receiving it. :D I didn't get any other item from the TF Fall collection even though Negligee looked tempting. But, I did also get the new TF Correcting Pen. Have you tried it? I am hoping it is exactly what I'm after in terms of concealing dark spots in a precise manner without having to use a fine brush. Fingers crossed. :)
Thanks for the TF info. Have a great week!

definitely recommend getting Trafalgar! A truly unique palette! While I like the new packaging alright, I will miss the old quite a bit :(

Hey there Miss Louise. :) I have finally added Trafalgar to cart and hit checkout online! I am looking forward to its arrival! (It has been "out of stock" at my local counters for 2-3 weeks!) I did try it in store and the red ES on the lid especially - was very impressed that it was actually wearable and flattering even! Yeah agree about the packaging. :(
DeleteThanks for the recommendation. x
Thanks for the helpful comparison and for the swatches- seems like a beautiful palette for those who like cool, grey tones :)
