By Terry have just released their Eye Designer Palettes that are currently available in two colour combinations: Smoky Nude (1) reviewed in this post and Color Design (2) reviewed in this next post. Each palette contains ten eye shadows, has a mix of finishes and can be applied dry for softer, every day wear or using a damp brush for added colour intensity.
Packaging
Like with other luxury makeup brands, the By Terry Eye Designer Palette comes with a violet velvet pouch for protection during storage or travel.
The palette itself looks very luxe and sleek in its signature purple colour. :) The surface of the lid has a rubber texture so it feels tactile and secure to hold in your hand. Unfortunately, it does mean it attracts any dirt and dust. /:-\ The palette clicks to close. It is secure enough, but I feel it could be made even more secure, especially when it's put in your hand bag without its velvet pouch.
The palette is made from solid, quality plastic and there's a little bit of weight to it, but not too heavy so it's easy to travel with. I'm relieved it's not made from weighty, metal like By Terry's powder blush (featured here and here) - while it looks and feel luxurious, it's not the most practical! ;)
Below is the size of the palette compared to my slightly-smaller-than-average hand.
And...how it compares to the size of the new NARSissist Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow Palette. It's the same width, but slightly shorter in length.
Below: the product description label on the bottom of the palette.
A large mirror is provided on the underside of the lid. Each eye shadow is embossed with the By Terry logo all along the outside.
Below is the dual-ended applicator brush provided. One end is a mini natural-bristled, soft, fluffy blending brush and the other is a nice, firm and precise eye liner brush. I like the long length of the dual-ended brush as it makes it easier to hold and I'm less likely to lose it compared to tiny ones! ;-) I would not recommend using the blending brush for picking up product from the pan and depositing onto the eye lids though as it's not dense enough for this and provides too much movement. I recommend a flat-shaped, soft, dense eye brush instead. The one provided in the palette is suitable just for blending out the edges.
Colours & Finishes
The palette consists of ten, neutral powder eye shadows with finishes from matte, satin to sheen. All designed for creating soft, everyday eye looks to more dramatic, evening smoky eye looks.
The top row of palette from left to right consists of:
// Dark taupe (satin to matte)
// Medium, warm copper (sheen)
// Light to medium taupe (satin to sheen)
// Beige (sheen)
// Dark, cool brown (matte)
The bottom row from left to right:
// Soft, medium mauve taupe (matte)
// Pale, cool pink (matte)
// Light peach cream (matte)
// Light cream/off-white (matte)
// Pale brown or tan (matte)
Swatches (Dry)
Below are swatches applied dry with a clean finger on my medium, olive (~NC30) skin tone. All were photographed indoors under artificial lighting and using a strobe unless indicated otherwise.

Above: Again, but shot in low light without a strobe to capture any iridescence in the eye shadows.

Swatches (Wet)
Here are the swatches applied with a damp brush.

Texture, Pigmentation, Application & Longevity
The texture is exquisite and remind me of Burberry Sheer Eye Shadows. They are buttery soft and so finely milled.
All the shades have excellent pigmentation and apply very smoothly, evenly and adhere to the eye lids well on their own (dry without a primer underneath - and for reference, I have normal skin condition on my eye lids). It was only during swatching dry using a finger that I found the dark shade in the top row (left-most) to be a little dry and patchy - otherwise, I found it to apply just as well as the others using a brush on the eye lids so it wasn't an issue.
I found it best to apply these eyeshadows using a soft, dense brush due to its soft, fine texture. This allows you to pick up as much product with little force and apply and blend onto the lids with more control and precision. The provided applicator blending brush end is not dense enough so it gives too much movement when picking up eye shadow and depositing onto the lids so powder tended to get everywhere.
With a dampened brush, all the shades performed effortlessly and smoothly. The colours apply almost like watercolour in that the texture remains thin rather than thick like cream eye shadows. It goes on like second skin, and the colours are so much more vibrant, intense and even. I feel like a real artist/painter playing around with it! ^_^ ;-)
When applied dry, I found the eye shadows to be very long lasting - I wore them for about eight hours and by the end of that period, everything was still in place with maybe only the slightest fading, but there was no creasing or patchiness. In fact, it looked a little more luminous as it melded with the natural oils in my skin over time so it looked really good!
Size
Each of the ten eye shadows contain 1.4 g / 0.05 oz of product.
Made in Italy.
Overall
Despite the exorbitant price point (being By Terry - it is an ultra luxury brand), the texture, pigmentation and wear are the best they could be - impressive formula overall, a joy to play with and a neutral lover's eye candy. The absence of overly shimmery or glittery eye shadows will appeal to most like myself. I only wish that there wasn't an excess of light, matte shades in the bottom row of the palette. More medium shades would have made this palette more complete, versatile and more worth the money. I am keen to compare these to the new Burberry Wet & Dry Silk and Glow eye shadows, which I have yet to try. If they are just as good then they would be a more affordable luxury option*. For now, I'm happy with it and I think it would appeal to other By Terry fans out there who are willing to pay the price.
*[Update (04/03/2015): I said "more affordable" in general between the two brands, but of course those Burberry eye shadows currently only come in as single eye shadows (at 2.7 g / 0.09 oz) as opposed to a palette of ten, so it would be more expensive to purchase them individually. ;) But, I reckon if Burberry were to release a similar palette (what a dream that would be!), it would most likely be less expensive as with the rest of their line when you compare the two brands].
Availability
I purchased mine from Space NK (UK) online. I've been informed by a lovely reader that the palettes are limited edition according to Space NK.
Hope this was useful. :)
Thanks for looking! ^_^ xo
Are you a By Terry fan? Does this palette take your fancy?

I bought this palette too and agree with every thought in your review! From the fact that they remind me burberry sheer eyeshadows (but still not as sheer) and that despite high price I think it is really worth the money. And I also can't find it out whether it is a LE or not. I hope that not because if limited I would buy a backup. I rather tend to think that these are the first two palettes and more of them will follow in this format.
ReplyDeleteHi there! I'm glad we agreed about this palette and you have it too. *high five* :D Though I personally don't really think the Burberry ESs were as "sheer" as they were labelled - yes some of the shades were soft in colour and intended to be, but I thought they had great colour pay-off. I've just updated my posts with info that they are indeed LE - thanks to Bronwyn who commented (she's confirmed this with Space NK). So a bit unfortunate there! :( Anyway, I'll let you go and get your backup!
DeleteThanks for reading my review and sharing your views. ^_^ x
Thank you for this review and the swatches. I have been searching for any word on these palettes online and your blog is the first to post about them. I hope these become available in the US. I can't wait for your review and swatches of the 2nd palette.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure Tawna! I can't confirm, but I'm pretty confident they'll make them available in the US soon - as they usually do with most things (you lucky peeps!) ;) I've posted my review & swatches of the 2nd palette on my blog, so do check it out. Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting. ^_^ x
DeleteGreat review. Gorgeous swatches. Great for me but sad for my wallet said many a beauty lover. I emailed Spacenk and unfortunately the palettes are limited edition. Hoping the brightly coloured one is just as good because many brands even luxury ones fail at brightly coloured eyeshadows. Also, good to know that these are comparable to burberry's new line.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bronwyn! And thanks so much for letting me know they're LE! That's a pity. :( I shall update my posts with that info now so people don't miss out! Will post the review of the other palette as soon as I can. x
DeleteGlad to hear the formula is so top-notch! The shades look absolutely beautiful :)

I put one of these in my Space NK shopping basket at the weekend with a view to buying this week. Big mistake.....huge! They've sold out and I'm begging Space NK to find me one from a store. I need this like I needed Tom Ford's Nude Dip. It looks so beautiful in your pictures I could cry frustration that I didn't just buy it there and then! 😱 I have YSL's 10 piece nude palette and am anxiously waiting to find out whether Dior release the Reviver Eye Palette in Nude in UK but nothing excites me more than the arrival of By Terry / Tom Ford Limited Editions. Well maybe a new pair of Manolos put you get my drift. I need to find this palette! Great review. Xx
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda! I've just checked space NK (US and UK) now (07 May) and they appear to have both palettes in stock again. Harrods.com who ship internationally also have it now. I hope you've managed to get one as I think they're worth it. ;-) I've not tried YSL's palette yet. I have swatched Dior's Reviver Palette - it's lovely but passed on it seeing as I've got too many palettes already and also found it too pricey just for 5 ESs and a liner. Also, I have medium to tanned olive skin so I don't think the shades have enough contrast between them for my skin tone and fear it will look muddy. But, I'm sure it will look beautiful on lighter skin tones! ;)
DeleteThanks for checking out my blog and commenting. So glad you liked my review! ^_^ xo
Those wet swatches of the top row sold me!!! I just wished the bottom row isn't so pasty.... but glad to hear the texture and quality are superb!
ReplyDeleteHi Linda. Yeah, I'm not inclined to use the matte ESs wet as they are fine dry. I see what you mean about them perhaps looking "pasty" - I guess it's just because they're flat colours with no iridescence or complexity (esp the soft, pastel shades). Complete opposite effect to the shimmer shades when swatched wet - it really intensifies the depth of colour and lifts the shimmers.
